Men and Depression

Posted by bradcash     Category: Depression, Male Depression, Uncategorized

Men and women suffer depression almost at the same rate. However, the male population is encouraged to demonstrate strenght when presented with the symptons  otherwise they are considered weak. Unfortunately they are more prone to depression related illnesses and suicide than women because of the denial factor being exerted.

Most males cover their feelings of depression with drugs, sex, work or alcohol. Men or more agressive, angry and frustrated as opposed to helplessness or hopeliness as depicted by women. Men rarely seek treatment and more rarely admit to having a problem at all.

To men depression is a silent battle using drugs and smiles and carrying on as if nothing is wrong until they are totally at a loss. It is very difficult to notice the signs of depression if one is close to the male and is even more difficult if the man is covering up his feelings.

If you notice a man with the typical symptoms of depression, not sleeping or uncontrollable anger then let the man know you care about him and will listen when he wants to talk. Please do not push the issue and just let things run their course.
