Men and Depression

Posted by bradcash     Category: Depression, Male Depression, Uncategorized

Men and women suffer depression almost at the same rate. However, the male population is encouraged to demonstrate strenght when presented with the symptons  otherwise they are considered weak. Unfortunately they are more prone to depression related illnesses and suicide than women because of the denial factor being exerted.

Most males cover their feelings of depression with drugs, sex, work or alcohol. Men or more agressive, angry and frustrated as opposed to helplessness or hopeliness as depicted by women. Men rarely seek treatment and more rarely admit to having a problem at all.

To men depression is a silent battle using drugs and smiles and carrying on as if nothing is wrong until they are totally at a loss. It is very difficult to notice the signs of depression if one is close to the male and is even more difficult if the man is covering up his feelings.

If you notice a man with the typical symptoms of depression, not sleeping or uncontrollable anger then let the man know you care about him and will listen when he wants to talk. Please do not push the issue and just let things run their course.

Facing Depression Head On

Posted by bradcash     Category: Depression

My mother has been feeling under the weather? Always not in the mood to be around others and have a good time? She has been suffering from prolonged sadness for quite some time now, had bouts of depression and was relunctant to go to a psychiatrist, not trusting doctors is habitual for an 83 year old woman.

I explained to her that depression or prolonged sadness is actually quite common in the United States, around 9.5 percent of the American population actually suffer from this illness, however, not all of them get to be treated, thus, depression and its ill-effects continue to be a burden to some individuals.

We, my brother and I, explained this illness may seem quite simple to treat but in reality, it takes more than a little cheering up to actually cure depression.

We suggested constant visits to a cognitive behavior therapist was a must as well as taking all the prescribed medicines that the doctor will ask the patient to take – none of these exactly come cheap, but the amount of suffering she was going through because of depression was enough reason already for the family to start taking notice and face depression head on.

Depression was often getting  in the way of her daily activities and her normal functions, her zest for life had quickly and easily dissipate due to depression.

And in place of her sunny disposition was more or less a person who hates herself, having no self-confidence, trying to isolate herself from the world and basically just not caring about living any more. Even more her suffering from depression wasn’t the only one who’s was suffering from this destructive illness, her loved ones were sure to follow suit. By seeing my mother grow through such rough patches, basically not caring about anything or anyone anymore.

Fortunately we discovered depression can now be cured, especially when diagnosed early. Depressed people can actually be treated through therapy and medication.

There are many psychosocial treatments available that cognitive behavior therapists can offer to their patients, both actually prove to be able to produce fruitful and positive results.

We, the family and close friends, tended to not recognize the symptoms of a depressed person even when it presented itself to us.

It was difficult to be honest with ourselves and with our mother to work this disease to a cure. We overlooked the obvious symptoms that depressed individuals often exhibit such as suddenly lacking interest in  hobbies, sleeping too much or not being able to sleep at all, suddenly becoming anti-social, talks a lot about death or being a worthless person.

There are many more symptoms but which we later learned from a reputable psychiatrist. We were fortunate mother’s depression was still at an early stage.

Depression should not be feared, instead, we learned that mother should start taking charge of her life and face this illness and fight it. Life is too beautiful a gift to waste.

Depression was not killing mother’s body but it certainly was killing her spirit. We had to put a stop to her believing she was the victim.

My mother still suffers from depression but we have worked with her to ease the pain. It has worked quite well for us.

Only recently have we found something that has been helpful and rather cheap at the price.
