adhd Diet By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marc_Neveux]Marc Neveux
Have you ever imagined a world of chaos and frustration? That's what the millions of sufferers of feel like every single day! Most of these people are children, to make the situation even sadder. They struggle with their schoolwork, and homework is even harder. They get fussed at for not sitting still, are forgetful, and frequently moody.
With 3-5% of today's school-aged children being diagnosed with this condition, the long line outside the school nurses office for a midday medication is growing with alarming speed. The use of prescription medications such as Ritalin, Concerta, or Strattera is the accepted norm to treat these children. This carries a whole other list of problems, such as inability to sleep, cardiac trouble, and even thoughts of suicide! I don't know about you, but the very idea frightens me.
Your child has though. What are you supposed to do? They have to be able to focus and do their school work, and not bounce off the walls. Well, what if I told you that some children are being cured by altering their diet? It's true. All across the country, symptoms are being lessened or ended by a change in diet.
Elimination diets usually run for 8 to 12 weeks. With this type of diet processed foods and artificial sweeteners are completely removed. Focus is put on eating healthy, all natural foods in a balanced diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats, usually only chicken or fish. After a cleansing period of about 6 weeks, eat one extra food for several meals and then go back to the elimination diet for about 2 days. At this point, you should begin keeping a detailed
diary on what your child is eating and what their mood seems to be. Pay particular attention to what your child has eaten prior to becoming extremely hyper or lacking focus. Read labels on anything consumed to make sure you're avoiding negative foods. If no reaction is noted, add that food to your list of things you can eat on the elimination diet.
The other way you can try this diet is eliminate one food group a week until you find the culprit. Begin with foods that are highly processed or have a lot of added flavoring in them. If an allergy or sensitivity is present, it will be noticeable nearly immediately.
Of course, not all cases can be cured by diet alone, just as not all cases can be cured by Ritalin, herbal remedies or behavior therapies. Each individual must work out a care plan specifically for them or their child, under the supervision of their doctor or specialist.
If you or your child is on prescription medication for and would like to try a diet plan instead, first you must talk to your doctor. It is dangerous to cease taking certain medications prescribed for this condition without tapering off slowly. Weaning will help you minimize or avoid potentially negative side effects. So make that first phone call, and see what can be done!
